Global Day of Action on Military Spending (GDAMS)- Halifax, N.S.April 25, 2017The public is invited to join the Nova Scotia Voice of Women for Peace (NSVOW) at this international Global Day of Action on Military Spending (GDAMS).Who: Nova Scotia Voice of Women for Peace (NSVOW) What: Global Day of Action on Military Spending (GDAMS) Where: Halifax Central Library, Spring Garden Road When: 11:30 1:30, FRIDAY, April 28, 2017 How do you want your tax dollars spent? At the Halifax event, the public will be given the opportunity to identify their priorities for taxpayer spending, by placing 25 cent quarters (supplied by NSVOW) in jars labeled: Arts & Culture, Environment, Health and Education, Military, Peace, and Women & Children. This year, the Global Campaign Against Military Spending takes place from April 18th to April 28th. The International Peace Bureau and its members organize events all around the world (Australia, Colombia, Kenya, Nigeria, Cameron, New Zealand, Nigeria, Philippines, USA, Canada, UK, Germany, India, Japan, etc). Nova Scotia Voice of Women for Peace supports this global action and urges all Canadians to ask questions of those in power as they set priorities and spend the money. Where do you think they should spend our money? Last year, the Government of Canada spent $28 billion on the Department of National Defence. Canada is now the 7th highest spender on the military among NATO members and the 17th highest spender on the military in the world. Is there room for transformation in an approach that is business as usual? In fact, over the last two decades, military spending has dramatically increased. With catastrophic climate change and greater poverty and inequality in this country and around the world, Canada cannot waste precious resources on war and weapons. What does change look like for you? Do we have to spend the most money on defense? Can we move to peace and sustainability? "We believe that war is not healthy for children and women and men. Redirect military spending to human needs. We cannot avoid climate catastrophe without stopping military greenhouse gas emissions. Stop the wars, stop the warming." - Sandy Greenberg 2017 "Keep women at the table. Speak out. Consider that . . . the defence sector is not only highly gendered in terms of womens underrepresentation, but defence policies and military operations have disproportionally negative impacts on women." - Dr. Maya Eichler 2016 NOVA SCOTIA VOICE OF WOMEN FOR PEACE Since their first meeting in Muriel Duckworths living room in the 1960s, Nova Scotia Voice of Women for Peace have been positive and vocal advocates for change .come join us!
