George Galloway Hearing at the Federal CourtMarch 29, 2009TORONTO - A large group of observers gathered at the Federal Court in Toronto today to see submissions regarding an interlocutory injunction that would allow British MP, George Galloway, to enter Canada tomorrow. The controversial politician had received a letter from the High Commissioner that he would be inadmissible to Canada under a preliminary assessment. Mr. Galloway and his supporters challenged this letter as a decision that usurped the role of immigration statutes, and sought a temporary measure from the court that would allow him to speak in Canada as scheduled over the following week. Omar Ha-Redeye, a law student at the University of Western Ontario, was on hand to record the legal arguments of both parties. The judge, Justice Martineau, indicated there has never been anything like this before in Canadian law. "From a strictly academic perspective, the Galloway case raises some interesting legal issues," said Ha-Redeye. "We will be looking at the outcome of this decision with keen interest to see the direction of Canadian law." The decision of Justice Martineau is expected by 2 p.m. tomorrow, which is the latest time Mr. Galloway would still be able to make his speaking commitments in Toronto on Monday.
