News Release
National standards for fitness
professionals
on the horizon
September 1, 2006
On Friday August 25, 2006, at the Can-Fit-Pro Toronto 2006 International
Fitness and Club Business Conference and Trade Show, a panel made
up of representatives of fitness certification organizations and
commercial and not-for-profit fitness facilities convened to discuss
the need for national standards for fitness professionals.
With the health and safety of Canadians in mind, all participants
recognized the need to work toward the development of standards
which would then be incorporated into fitness certification programs
across the country. The panellists agreed that an inclusive, collaborative
process must be undertaken to ensure the needs of all fitness industry
stakeholder groups are met, including consumers who are at times
confused by trying to navigate between certifications.
"While we are disappointed that some of the stakeholder groups
we invited to attend the discussion declined, we are optimistic
about the progress that was made with the groups who did participate
and by those in the audience who attended and look forward to future
meetings." - StÉphane Cova, Can-Fit-Pro Certification
Director.
The group agreed to continue the discussion at a future date and
location to be determined.
The panellists for the session included:
Patricia Clark, Executive Director, Canadian Fitness Matters
Susan Lee, President, Canadian Professional Trainers Network
Tia Wintre, Program Coordinator, Parks and Recreation Ontario
David Hardy, President, Fitness Industry Canada
StÉphane Cova, Certification Director, Can-Fit-Pro
