'Press Pants' Taunt To B.C. Press Council
Special Editorial Section

by Nick Russell

VANCOUVER — B.C.'s first try at a press council has crept off to a painful start with The Vancouver Sun's provocative columnist, Doug Collins, unleashing some of his most venomous vituperation on the new group.

Formation of the council was announced by Metro magazine, (whose editor, Clive Cocking, is on the new committee) in a piece predicting that the group would "provoke a severe knee-jerk spasm in one columnist." Collins responded on cue. He noted that the committee is dominated by academics and "A proliferation of Mizzes" but contained few working newspersons.

His headline: "The press council can press my pants."

The council has been largely ignored by other media.
