We are pleased to introduce the new e-newsletter version of The
Sources HotLink, The Sources newsletter formerly available in print, and
now available as a bi-weekly electronic publication.
The Sources HotLink features articles on media, journalism, press
freedom, free speech and censorship, as well as on the media and
publishing industries, as well as on media relations, public relations,
publicity, fundraising, and crisis communications.
Each issue will spotlight content from the Sources.com website, including recent articles, resources, news releases, and experts and spokespersons. We'll also feature items from the Sources Calendar, books from the Sources Bookshelf, periodicals from the Sources Newsstand, and topics in the massive Sources Subject Index.

Pro-democracy website closed amid claims of commerical pressure and threats
The International Federation of
Journalists (IFJ) is deeply concerned about press freedom in Hong Kong
after a pro-democracy news website was suddenly closed, with the
co-founder admitting he was “afraid”. The IFJ has said it is another
case of the ongoing pressure placed on Hong Kong’s media.
The site, House News, was
established in 2012 by Tony Tsoi Tung-Ho and three others. On July 26,
Tsoi posted a closure notice on the front page of the website. He wrote:
“Hong Kong has been changed so that it is no longer easy to run a
normal media. … The current political atmosphere is extremely
disturbing. A number of democracy advocates have been followed, had
their past investigated and been smeared. White terror has been
spreading throughout society. I felt this stress.”

First Half of 2015 sees more magazine launches than closures
MediaFinder,
the largest online database of American and Canadian publications is
reporting that in the first half of 2014, 93 magazines launched and 30
closed.
Eight Canadian magazines launched during the second quarter including Femmes, etc., CPA Magazine and the CPA Magazine French Edition. Five Canadian magazines folded, including Via Destinations and Profit: Your Guide to Business Success. Fresh Juice dropped its print edition.

Palestinian death toll includes 13 media workers
As Israel announced the withdrawal
of its troops from the Gaza Strip on 6 August, Reporters Without Borders
reported that 12 Palestinian journalists and one media worker have been
killed since the start of Operation Protective Edge on 8 July, seven of
them in connection with their work. This is the highest toll since
Israel withdrew in 2005.

Climatefast holds Cross-Country Unicyclist in 5,000 km ride for climate action
Joseph
Boutilier has been on the road since April 5, traversing western and
central Canada on one wheel in an attempt to raise the profile of the
climate crisis in advance of the 2015 federal election. Boutilier will
unicycle through Richmond Hill before arriving in Toronto, where he’ll
spend a week meeting with journalists, politicians, environmental groups
and other supporters, before carrying on through Oshawa and Kingston en
route to his final destination: Parliament Hill.

IFJ Welcomes Release of US Journalist Theo Curtis in Syria
The
International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today joined its
affiliates in the US in welcoming the release of Theo Curtis, the
American journalist who was released on Sunday 24 August in Syria, while
voicing concern for the safety of many others still being held,
including up to twenty in Syria alone.

Turkey, enemy of the internet?
Reporters Without Borders wants the
Turkish government’s assaults on Internet freedom to be raised at the
Istanbul Internet Governing Forum (IGF). Together with Amnesty
İnternational, Human Rights Watch, the Turkish Association of
Journalists (TGC) and Turkey’s Alternative Informatics Association
(Alternatif Bilisim Dernegi), RWB will hold a news conference in
Istanbul on 4 September in order to put the alarming decline in freedom
of information in Turkey on the IGF agenda.
