A chastity cage is a device which encloses the male genitals to prevent stimulation and erection. Modern plastic chastity cages are primarily used in BDSM play, as a means by which the keyholder (the female, or dominant male, partner), controls their partner's orgasms, and as a sex toy.^[1]

Most chastity cages have two parts: a ring seated around the base of the penis behind the scrotum and a capped tube, into which the flaccid penis is inserted. The tube is perforated to allow fluids to drain easily. Some designs have a curved or angled tube to make erections uncomfortable. The two parts mate together on hinges or pins and are held fast with a padlock, holding the testicles in a gap close enough to prevent the penis from being pulled out.

Many manufacturers offer tamper-evident plastic seals. These seals have unique serial numbers and are metal detector-safe, making them suitable for wearers who travel frequently.

The male genitalia is a delicate structure, comprising skin, the soft spongy tissue of the penis which becomes engorged with blood during arousal, and the testicles. A chastity cage must be properly sized, fitted and adjusted in order to be secure and not damage the genitals. Ring size and spacing are the two most important adjustments that can be made. A ring that is too tight will cut off blood flow, while one that is too loose will not be secure.

Current research suggests that frequent orgasms help to prevent prostate cancer in men, and also relieves stress. A chastity cage, depending on usage, will remove the ability to masturbate, and as such, there can be a health risk to the man. This is not an issue where the keyholder allows the caged male partner to have orgasms regularly, but it can be an issue where the caged male wears the belt for extended periods of time. This can possibly be countered by a process referred to as "milking" where the man's prostate is massaged so the fluids of the prostate are drained by manual prostate stimulation via the anus without producing an erection. This drains the prostate without allowing the man to experience an orgasm.
