Disability Expert to Address Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Alone Hamilton, ON – July 5, 2004 – Dr. Mark Nagler knows what it means to battle the odds. Now he is bringing his story and expertise to many Canadian grandparents battling odds of their own: raising grandchildren alone, with little income or help from the biological parents. CANGRANDS, a grassroots internet support group that connects these kin caregivers across Canada, is hosting its yearly Canadian grandparent conference and camp this summer. At this event, Dr. Mark Nagler, Dr. Mark Nagler was born with Cerebral Palsy. He did not learn to walk until he was five years old and has never been able to write. His parents were powerful advocates who insisted that their son have a fully integrated public school education at a time when most students with his level of disabilities were institutionalized. In spite of his disabilities he was able to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia, a Master's degree from the University of Chicago, and a PhD from Stirling University in Great Britain. Professor Nagler taught for four years at McMaster University and then embarked on a distinguished twenty nine year career at Renison College, University of Waterloo. About Dr. Mark Nagler, Ph.D.: Dr. Nagler addresses people with disabilities, specific disability groups, employers and educators. He is skilled at providing programs within schools and organizations which encourage the acceptance and integration of the disabled into mainstream environments. As an academic he is credited with authoring the first text in Disability Studies which was adopted by 169 universities around the world. He has also authored 10 other books in Native Studies, Race
