OACETT project will help
international technicians and technologists

Feb. 16, 2004. OACETT - The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists, in partnership with the Centre for Language, Training and Assessment (CLTA) and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, has launched an important new project to help remove barriers to employment for international engineering technicians and technologists. The project is called Options: Choosing the Optimal Route to Success for Internationally Trained Professionals in the Field of Engineering/Applied
Science Technology.

With its partners, OACETT will offer internationally educated engineering technicians and technologists high-calibre services in certification preparation, language and communication training and employment preparation to help them continue their careers in Ontario.

"We have engineering and applied science technicians and technologists from around the world who want to work in Ontario. This new project will help them develop the skills and experience they need to become certified and work in their field of expertise," says Angela Shama, C.E.T., P.Eng., executive director of OACETT.

"Helping international applicants meet the requirements for certification is another way OACETT protects the public by ensuring that they meet the education, experience and ethical standards of the profession," said Shama.

The project involves more than $1.5 million over the next 2 1/2 years. It's part of a government initiative of more than $4 million to strengthen bridge training programs for internationally trained individuals in teaching, engineering and health care.

OACETT and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities have also developed a comprehensive Web-based fact sheet to help internationally educated engineering technicians and technologists understand how their skills fit with Ontario standards. This efactsheet, available at www.oacett.org, describes how to become certified in the engineering and applied science technology professions in Ontario. This site will help engineering and applied science technicians and technologists who are considering working in Ontario.

OACETT is a professional organization representing more than 21,000 members. Since 1957, OACETT has certified engineering/applied science technicians and technologists, graduates from Ontario's colleges and other post-secondary institutions. The self-governing, non-profit association was provincially legislated in 1984 and has statutory powers and responsibilities. OACETT maintains standards of excellence in the practice of engineering and applied-science technology in Ontario.
