Boarding School Opens Doors for Ontario GirlsJanuary 14, 2013TORONTO, January 14, 2013: The Bishop Strachan School (BSS) hits the road in Ontario to meet potential students who qualify for enrolment into the unique Boarding program at Canada?s oldest private girls school. The BSS road trip begins January 14 with stops in Sudbury, North Bay, Huntsville, Haliburton, Barrie, London, Stratford, Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph. Appointments can also be made outside of these areas. Families with girls going into Grade 7 through 11 who are interested in meeting about BSS, Boarding or the admission process can contact Suzanne Ranson at sranson@bss.on.ca or 416-483-4325 ext. 2740. Head of School Deryn Lavell says it is important to hold face-to-face meetings with families interested in the benefits of boarding at an all-girls school. ?The real value of boarding lies in developing learning and living skills for the 21st century,? says Lavell. ?We believe developing autonomy, confidence, a strong voice and an ethical mindset is a major advantage for students who become part of a community of girls from over 20 different countries.? The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS) reports that boarding students spend nearly twice the hours (18) on homework than day students and an average of 12 hours per week exercising or playing sports compared to nine hours for day students. They say the 24-hour community of a boarding school environment allows the faculty to seize every teachable moment whether in the classroom, on the playing field, or in the dormitory. The BSS boarding environment ? revolving around Wellness, Exploration, Leadership and Diversity - helps girls build confidence, critical thinking skills and social intelligence. It?s a culture more than a century in the making.?Founded in 1867, BSS has been around since the confederation of Canada,? says Lavell. ?And that rich history creates a strong foundation on which to build our innovative, modern approach.? BSS boasts an enviable record of 100% graduate acceptance into top-tier universities around the world, and an alumnae network of over 6000 successful graduates who continue to connect to the School and each other. Some of the institutions recent BSS graduates are attending include McGill University, University of Toronto, Princeton University, Cornell University, Oxford University, London School of Economics, University of Edinburgh and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. There are limited spots available at The Bishop Strachan School for September 2013 and applications are now being accepted. Scholarships - based on strong academics as well as financial need - are also available. Learn more at www.bss.on.ca.
