Emmanuel International Canada is helping the families of Barbuda Island with emergency food kits and clean water

September 14, 2017

Hurricane Irma ran a path of destruction across the Leeward Islands and Barbuda was the hardest hit. Packing 185-mile-per-hour winds, the storm destroyed houses, snapping trees and killing at least one person. Confirmed reports indicate that the infrastructure of Barbuda is 90% destroyed.

Gaston Browne, the prime minister of the two-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, described the island as "barely habitable" after the powerful Category 5 storm struck. Immediate requirement is to provide emergency food kits and clean water.

This is a crisis of major proportion, for those who are in shelters have their houses destroyed. The 1500 families on Barbuda were evacuated to nearby island Antigua until the Government can assess the situation.

Emmanuel International Canada EIC Director Richard McGowan said, "We are coordinating with the Moravian Church as well as through our EIC network to maximize our potential response for Barbuda, EIC has worked with the Moravian Church on past projects."

The airport on Barbuda has been destroyed, which means that Antigua will be used as a hub.
