Creating a worldwide Nakba 70th anniversary community thorough ActionApril 11, 2018With the 70th anniversary of the Deir Yassin Massacre on April 9, and especially with Gaza's heroic "Great March of Return" leading to May 15, the world's attention is being drawn to the Nakba like never before. To mark Nakba Day, nakba70action.org has launched an Action Kit to help activists create powerful "theatre action" commemorations for the 70th anniversary of the Nakba in public spaces around the world. The Nakba (word for "catastrophe" in Arabic) is the period in 1948 that has marked the modern Palestinian experience and reality leading to the mass expulsion of more than 700,000 Palestinians and destruction of 500+ villages. It was the culmination of a 30-year process under the British Mandate to destroy Palestinian society and culture in order to create the state of Israel in Palestine. Contrary to popular understanding, Nakba Day (May 15) is not the beginning of the ethnic cleansing of Palestine as half the people had already been expelled by that date when the British left Palestine and Israel declared itself a state. Activists around the world are invited to download a free "Action Kit" (in English, can be translated) with everything needed to plan, promote and hold an event preferably in a public space. The focus point is a map of historic Palestine (3D or 2D) and marking the 418 villages destroyed in 1948 with flags or stones or tealights. Typically activist groups are strapped for time, people and resources and the Action Kit provides a set of ready-made and documents editable with local information and details to minimize the time and effort required and deliver a dignified, informative and public event. The Action Kit includes: posters, opening remarks, poems, list of villages, handout literature, and more. Nakba70action.org offers an event listing feature that allows groups worldwide to submit their local event and be added to others in one worldwide listing to help create a Nakba 70 community. Extensive links to films, videos and printed resources round out the offering.
