Raj Anand and Paul Perell of WeirFoulds received the award for their tremendous contributions through education, mentoring and promoting greater access to justice. The medal recognizes outstanding service within the profession in an area of practice, in academia, or in another professional capacity that demonstrates the highest ideals of the legal profession. A recipient can earn the award through a devotion to professional duties over a long period or for a single outstanding act of service. This year's award was the first time that the medal was awarded to two members from one firm in the same year. The Law Society medal was awarded in a special ceremony on Wednesday, May 21, 2003. WeirFoulds LLP is also proud to welcome back the Honourable Allan McNiece Austin since his retirement from the Ontario Court of Appeal. Mac Austin practised with the firm for 32 years before joining the Superior Court of Ontario in 1986.He transferred to the (Ontario) Court of Appeal in 1992, and remained there until his retirement from the bench in March 2003. He has joined the ADR Group at the firm and will be doing mediations and arbitrations. Derry Millar, a senior partner at WeirFoulds and a recently re-elected bencher of LSUC, took the lead in inviting Mac back to the firm. "In addition to being a wonderful person, Mac is a great teacher and an example of the consummate professional that typifies our firm." WeirFoulds LLP was further honoured when the OBA gave the second annual Award of Excellence in the Trusts and Estate section to Malcolm Archibald. The Trusts and Estates award is designed to recognize exceptional contributions and achievements by a member of the OBA Trusts and Estates section through: the teaching of trust and estates law; the development of wills, trusts and estates law through lecturing, scholarly writing or lobbying; the enhancement of the practice and profile of wills, trust and estates law; leadership in the trusts and estates bar, government relations, the LSUC and OBA in relation to wills, trust and estates issues, policy and legislation. Malcolm is recognized as a leading practitioner in estate planning in Toronto in The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory and is Chair of the Estates Sub-Committee of the Civil Rules Committee of Ontario. He will receive the Award of Excellence at a special ceremony on December 1, 2003.
