News Release Bellwood Health Services
Celebrates 20 Years of FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Toronto, ON - March 1, 2004) Founded in 1984, Bellwood Health Services Inc. in Toronto is poised to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its adult residential treatment services for addictions and eating disorders. The anniversary celebrations salute the work of Dr. R.Gordon Bell, a recognized pioneer in addiction treatment, and his daughters, M. Linda Bell, President/CEO of Bellwood, and Janice Hambley, PH.D., VP of Clinical Services. The Bell Family was awarded the Alcohol and Drug Recovery Association's President's Shield Award in June 2003, for their lifetime contribution to the betterment of the addictions continuum in Ontario. In October 2003, Linda Bell received the Canadian Healthcare Manager's Who's Who in Healthcare "Healthcare Provider" award in recognition of her demonstrated leadership and innovation for healthcare delivery in Canada. Though Dr. Bell has retired, his family has carried on the legacy of the work he started. "We have an historical commitment to the treatment of addictions which began with the development of my father's treatment model in 1946," states Linda Bell. Dr. Bell's addiction treatment model and clinics have cared for more than 35,000 clients and their families. According to Janice Hambley, Ph.D., "This year we will celebrate the people who have helped to define the success of Bellwood. Our staff, volunteers and alumni will be acknowledged." To mark its 20th anniversary, Bellwood has a number of special events planned throughout the year. This summer will feature training and education sessions for treatment professionals. These events promise an array of addiction specialists and internationally known speakers. About Bellwood: Bellwood Health Services has emerged as a Canadian treatment centre known for innovation in addiction treatment through such ground-breaking initiatives as the establishment of the first Canadian in-patient cocaine treatment program and the first residential treatment program for sexual addiction. Bellwood was also the first addiction treatment facility in Canada to be awarded the four-year "Accreditation with Distinction" by the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation, the highest rating a health organization can receive.
