Finalists announced for third annual Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the Public SectorApril 11, 2011OTTAWA, ON -- (April 7, 2011) Certified Management Accountants of Canada (CMA Canada) and the U.K.-based Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) are pleased to announce the selection of finalists for the third annual Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the Public Sector.The annual award, consisting of a plaque and a $1,000 donation to a charity or scholarship fund of the winners choice, is given to a federal public servant or team working in a government department or agency and making a significant contribution to financial management, and/or comptrollership within the Government of Canada. This year the selection committee received a record number of submissions which allowed for two awards in the Innovation category, based on the size of the department/agency (small or large). The finalists for this years award ceremony, which will take place on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at the Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa, are (in alphabetical order): INNOVATION AWARD FINALISTS Small Departments/Agencies National Film Board of Canada Public Service Commission Large Departments/Agencies Department of National Defence Department of National Defence Public Works and Government Services Canada Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat We are very pleased with the high quality of submissions received for the award and the fact that we are able to recognize innovation in both small and large departments and agencies within the Government of Canada, said Joy Thomas, MBA, FCMA, C.Dir., President and CEO of CMA Canada. In addition to Ms. Thomas, the selection committee includes Ken Campbell, President, Financial Management Institute of Canada, Capital Chapter (Ottawa/Gatineau); Richard Dicerni, Deputy Minister, Industry Canada; Anne-Marie Gammon, Vice President, Financial Reporting, ING Real Estate Canada LP; Linda Lizotte-MacPherson, Commissioner & CEO, Canada Revenue Agency; Richard Monk, President & CEO, msight global inc.; James Ralston, Comptroller General of Canada; and Michael Tinkler, Senior Manager, Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton. The selection committee, at its discretion in any given year, may also identify a recipient for a Lifetime Achievement Award. This year, the committee determined that the CMA-CIPFA Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented at the dinner to Moyez H. Somani, MBA, FCMA, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Farm Credit Canada. Mr. Somani has over 25 years of senior management experience in the financial services industry, including Vice President, Investments at Saskatchewan Opportunities Corporation. He is also actively involved in the local community, has served as president of CMA Saskatchewans provincial council and was a member of CMA Canadas Council of Chairs. In addition, Mr. Somani was Chair of the audit committee and a member of the Board of Directors for the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency; a honourary board member of the Financial Management Institute of Canada and a member of the Aga Khan Economic Planning Board for Canada. As Chief Financial Officer and executive management team member, Mr. Somani has contributed to the remarkable growth and financial success of Farm Credit Canada, Canadas leading agriculture and agribusiness lender with a portfolio of more than $20 billion and 17 consecutive years of portfolio growth. Mr. Somani has made significant contributions to the public sector throughout his career in the areas of accounting, finance, treasury and internal audit. In addition, he has set a standard for the accounting and finance profession as a whole, both in his corporate roles and via his community service, said Steve Freer, Chief Executive of CIPFA.
