Heres your chance Want to learn more about how worms will help solve our current garbage crisis? Worms are natures original recyclers. Red Wiggler worms are going to play an ever-increasing role in waste management and soil production. Since October 2007, the Coffee Shed at Surrey Place has had 8,000 unusual workers taking care of all their organic matter including shredded paper. Red Wiggler Worms, that is. Red Wigglers consume 1/2 their weight daily in organic matter. One pound of worms and their descendants can transform one tonne of organic waste per year. The Coffee Shed at Surrey Place Centre wanted to start an environmentally sustainable system for dealing with coffee grounds and other organic waste produced within the Coffee Shed and Surrey Place Centre. We teamed up with Cathys Crawly Composters to assist! Common Ground is a non-profit co-operative that is dedicated to improving the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. Since they are generally regarded as being unemployable by mainstream businesses, the Cooperative decided to set up and establish businesses like the Coffee Shed at Surrey Place Centre so that they can own and operate it. Cathys Crawly Composters is an educational worm composting business. We conduct inspirational workshops and demonstrations. Our goal is to raise awareness about sustainable living. 50,000 people have seen our inspirational presentation. School initiatives include Worms Without Borders, Adopt-a-worm bin and sustainable fundraising. Cathy Nesbitt was a finalist in the 2008 Toronto Green Awards.
