Nominations for the 2012 Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the Public Sector now open

November 23, 2011

OTTAWA, ON (November, 7, 2011) -- Nominations are now being accepted at www.comptrollershipaward.com for the 2012 Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the Public Sector. In its fourth year, the award program recognizes the success of federal public servants who have made significant contributions to financial management or comptrollership services within the Government of Canada. Nominations close on February 10, 2012.

Any person within the Government of Canada, as well as the general public, is eligible to make a nomination. An independent selection committee comprised of senior public servants and industry experts will judge and determine the 2012 award winners. The recipients will be announced at a special dinner to be held in Ottawa in spring 2012.

The annual program, presented by Certified Management Accountants of Canada (CMA Canada) and the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), includes awards for Innovation and Financial Leadership (CFO). This year two awards will be granted in the Innovation category, one for a large department or agency and one for a small department or agency. Consideration forms are also being accepted for the CMA-CIPFA Lifetime Achievement Award, which is awarded at the discretion of the selection committee.

“The awards emphasize the importance of creativity and innovative thinking in advancing modern comptrollership practices within the federal government,” said Joy Thomas, President and CEO, CMA Canada. “Encouraging the application and sharing of best-in-class practices is central to sound and effective financial management.”

Created to recognize excellence in public sector financial management, the awards also provide well-deserved recognition for the dedication and hard work of financial management professionals.

“We can see in the current global crisis just how important it is for governments to bring high quality financial management to bear to run their businesses professionally. Where they fail to do so, we can also see the dire consequences for public services, economic growth and development and for people’s lives. We should all celebrate and salute the innovators and leaders who demonstrate excellence in comptrollership and inspire others to strive for higher standards," said Steve Freer, Chief Executive, CIPFA.

“Recognizing excellence is one of our core values”, adds Ms. Thomas. “This award program has created considerable attention and we are looking forward to another successful event this year.”
