Jewish human rights group to hold annual conference in Toronto this week

October 11, 2012

Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV), a national Jewish organization which opposes Israel's continued occupation of Palestine, will be holding its annual general meeting this week in Toronto. IJV works actively with other organizations nationally and internationally to challenge Israeli policies of racial and ethnic segregation, discrimination and military aggression against Palestinians. The conference takes place from October 18-20 at Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil Street, Toronto.

The theme for the three day conference, which is open to Jews and non-Jews, is "Not in our Name: Solidarity with Palestinian Resistance." The full program is available at www.ijvagm.com.

Local and international speakers at the conference will include Prof. Neve Gordon, a member of the Department of Politics and Government at Ben Gurion University, which has recently been targeted for closure by the Israeli Council on Higher Education based on the charge that the department's faculty lacks "scholarly objectivity." The department has been home to a number of high profile academics who oppose Israel's policies towards the Palestinians. More than 300 academics around the world have expressed support for members of the department.

Also scheduled to deliver talks are Yafa Jarrar, a noted Palestinian Canadian activist, Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb of Jewish Voice for Peace (USA), Prof. Amir Hassanpour of the University of Toronto, noted First Nations scholar and activist Bob Lovelace, and journalist Lia Tarachansky of the Real News Network.

Topics that will be addressed in the course of the gathering will include: the global politics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; Jewish solidarity with Palestinian resistance; the Jewish National Fund and the confiscation of Arab land; the history and practice of Jewish non-violence; Queers Against Israeli Apartheid and the conflict over the Toronto Pride Parade; and the recent decision by the United Church to support a boycott of products from Israeli settlements in the occupied territories.
