The story Israel doesn't want you to know: Israeli Resistance to Israeli ApartheidFebruary 17, 2009Shachaf Polakow, a member of the Israeli group, Anarchists Against the Wall (www.awalls.org), will be speaking in Toronto on 24 February 2009. He will speak about the work of the group who act jointly with the popular Palestinian struggles against the Wall in the West Bank, and will also speak about the current situation in Gaza. Polakow, also a member of the media collective, Active Stills (www.activestills.org), will also be presenting video footage and photographs.In December 2008, Anarchists Against the Wall and the Bilin Village Committee were jointly awarded the prestigious Carl von Ossietzky Medal---an award given annually by the Berlin-based International League of Human Rights, named after German Nobel Peace Prize winner Carl von Ossietzky who died as a result of being prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp. Recently, one of the co-founders of Anarchists Against the Wall, Matan Cohen, currently a student at Hampshire College in Massachusetts, was involved in helping to propel the college to divest from six companies that are heavily invested in Israel. In a recent report, Anarchists Against the Wall state that "Palestinian, Israeli and international protesters in the West bank, participating in non-violent demonstration against the attack on Gaza, met extreme army violence, which used live rounds, killing 4 Palestinian demonstrators in Ni′ilin, Kalkilia and Sawad. Many others were wounded. Demonstrators testified that in the wake of Operation Cast Lead, the army has reintroduced the use of the Ruger 22, a semiautomatic rifle that uses live ammunition to disperse crowds. This rifle was banned after the second Intifada for causing the deaths of a number of Palestinians, including youths and children."
