Arresting Journalists violates the law, must be stoppedMarch 24, 2009The Palestine Institute for Communication and Development (PICD) issued a press released condemning the targeting and arresting of Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.The PICD stated that security forces loyal to Fatah in the West Bank, and Hamas in Gaza, arrested a number of reporters. The center also slammed the repeated interrogations against reporter Sakhir Abu al-'On, head of the office of the French Press Agency in Gaza. It reported that al-`On was repeatedly interrogated for several hours, and that the police also withheld his identity card and passport. It also condemned the continued arrest of Farid Hammad, Eyad Srour, and Ahmad al-Beekawi, who were arrested by the Palestinian Security Forces in the West Bank. The Center said that arresting reporters violates the Palestinian law and is considered a direct violation to the freedom of press and freedom of expression. Furthermore, the Center called on security forces in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank to release all detained journalists.
