Tom Baker Cancer Centre receives $50,000 giftJune 9, 2009Calgary, AB (June 8, 2009) — The Breast Cancer Society of Canada (BCSC), in support of its goal of improving the lives of those affected by breast cancer across Canada, has generously granted $50,000 to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre. The Breast Cancer Society of Canada is a national charitable organization dedicated to funding Canadian breast cancer research to further detection, prevention and treatment, and to ultimately help find a cure. The BCSC chose the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary as a recipient because of its reputation as a leading centre for cancer research. The Centre provides advanced medical and supportive cancer care, patient and professional education, and conducts research through the Alberta Cancer Research Institute. "We are extremely grateful for the Breast Cancer Society of Canada′s grant," says Barbara A. Walley, MD FRCPC, Assistant Professor at the Centre. "This research will improve the accuracy of laboratory testing of estrogen receptor expression in breast cancer specimens enabling better treatment selection by oncologists." "This is just one of the many ways we′re supporting breast cancer research across Canada," adds Marsha Davidson, Executive Director of the Breast Cancer Society of Canada. "Through the generosity of Canadians from coast to coast, we′re able to fund innovative projects that can make a big difference!" Although the breast cancer research is being done in Calgary, its results may lead to benefits for breast cancer sufferers around the world!
