Richard Martin to Teach Humanitarian Assistance Project Management

April 26, 2010

MONTREAL – 26 April 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Alcera Consulting Inc. is proud to announce that Richard Martin will be teaching a course in the Management of Humanitarian Assistance Projects at Universite du Quebec en Outaouais in Gatineau, Quebec. This course is offered during the 2010 summer term and is part of the Masters in Project Management degree programme. Richard Martin is founder and president of Alcera Consulting Inc and has lectured at UQO since 2007.

Martin brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the topic. He got his formal start in project management in 1993 as a deputy project director with the Canadian Department of National Defence.
Says Martin, “I saw firsthand how disagreements can grow simply because of a failure to appreciate the subtleties of doing business in other cultures.”

As a former Army officer, Martin led teams of soldiers in Norway, Germany and Bosnia. “Bosnia was the most interesting, because we were responsible for enforcing the Dayton Peace Accord and keeping the peace in an area where Serbs had been ethnically cleansed and were attempting to return. We had a number of humanitarian projects on the go at any one time, and also had to ensure security for the many others that were underway. I had to deal with military officers, municipal politicians and employees, local police, NGOs, representatives of international organizations and allied militaries. It was a challenge, but an exhilarating learning experience.”

Martin intends to bring this cross-cultural sensibility to the classroom and to temper the more theoretical aspects of project management with his real-life experiences of international project management, security enforcement, and conflict management in extreme situations and conditions. He adds, "Much of the literature emphasizes differences between cultures. My experience is that the differences, while important, are rather superficial compared to our common humanity. I intend to build on that understanding and to provide my students with the practical tools to lead cross-cultural project teams in providing humanitarian relief.”

Richard Martin, president of Alcera Consulting Inc. /Alcera Conseil de gestion inc., brings his military experience, leadership and resolve to bear for the benefit of executives and organizations who wish to thrive by exploiting change, risk, and opportunity.
