National Museum of the American Indian

The National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) is a museum dedicated to the life, languages, literature, history, and arts of the native peoples of the Western Hemisphere. As an archive, it actively acquires and serves as a respository for the records of contemporary Native and Indigenous artists, writers, activists and organizations. It also holds the records of its predecessor institution, the Museum of the American Indian (MAI), Heye Foundation.

It was established in 1989 through an Act of Congress. Operating under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution, it has sites in Washington, DC and New York as well as on-line exhibitions.
