Twenty (20) women representing the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) will be in New York City from March 10th – March 21st. This year’s UNCSW theme is “Challenges and Achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls” is closely linked to the work of VOW.

Janis Alton, the Toronto-based co-chair of the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace, has attended the annual UN event since 1990. “On this, our 28th trip to the United Nations, we will link with the surging global women’s movement intent on celebrating this 103rd International Womens’ Day and on carefully scrutinizing the work of the longstanding UN Commission on the Status of Women, a governmental body set up by Eleanor Roosevelt. There is much to celebrate as women’s leadership grows. We know the catalytic power of women’s political empowerment. Together, we just may succeed in putting war on the shelf of history.”

VOW will host an NGO side event at the 58th UNCSW “Building Young Women’s Political Empowerment: An International Intergenerational Dialogue. This dialogue will feature a blend of insights regarding peace and security issues from women peace educators of different generations; therefore combining experiential wisdom and youthful perspectives.

Martina Buchal, the World Merit Ambassdor for 2014 and VOW member says” "There is much work yet to be done, so it is critical that dialogue on such important issues continue to drive the momentum for change. I am honoured to be able to attend the UNCSW with the likes of such admirable women who have already made great strides for women in peace-related issues."

Nine of the VOW contingency are young women who attended the VOW Peacemaker Summer Camps in 2013. Thanks to a generous grant from the Canadian Auto Workers union (CAW), VOW has 4 camps in 2013/2014. The Peacemaker Summer Camps, held in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia included sessions for the young women to learn about peace building strategies, the history of VOW along with enabling each individual to share their passion, interest and personal stories relating to peace, justice and women’s rights.

At the 58th session of the UN CSW, VOW women will be attending information sessions and meeting with other women from around the world who are actively working in their countries for the rights of women.
