Canada, Sign the Nuclear Ban Treaty!

August 30, 2017

The Security Council met on August 29th to consider the heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Janis Alton*, Co-Chair of VOW, sent a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, urging Canada to to be a voice for diplomacy at the UN and sign the Nuclear Ban Treaty.

Dear Prime Minister Trudeau;
Today, August 29, the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss North Korea’s firing of a missile over Japan recognizes the growing concern of North Korea’s actions. This meeting must also address the provocative action of the US and South Korea through their war games. We are writing to you to urge you to be a voice for diplomacy at the UN in these urgent matters.
For ten days starting August 21, 2017, U.S. and South Korean forces will be carrying out the Ulchi Freedom Guardian war drills involving tens of thousands of soldiers from both militaries simulating an invasion of North Korea. Proponents say they are needed to deter aggression from Pyongyang whereas North Korea views these rehearsals for war as highly threatening and justification for its nuclear and missile program. Shockingly, these war drills have been going on since 1953 when the Korean War was halted with a ceasefire, but not a peace treaty, despite opportunities to move forward on unification, and more recently a freeze option posed by North Korea.
In 2017. it is timely for Canada to help non-violently transform this worsening stand-off. To show good faith, we also urge Canada to quickly sign the nuclear ban treaty – a huge accomplishment which is ready to change the whole conversation about nuclear weapons.

Sincerely,

Janis Alton
