Canadian Voice of Women wants to Make for Space for Peace this electionOctober 7, 2015(Toronto) The Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) is releasing an open letter to the leaders of the major political parties asking them to make a pledge for peace. The national organization wants the political leaders to support VOW's twelve peace priorities in the final twelve days of the federal election. The priorities range from welcoming more refugees from war-torn countries, reducing military spending and implementing the recommendations of the External Review into Sexual Misconduct and Harassment in the Canadian Armed Forces."We are concerned about the rise of militarism in our communities, increased arms sales overseas, and Canadian Forces airstrikes in the Middle East," says VOW board member Tamara Lorincz, "We want Canada to be a leader in diplomacy and disarmament not war." Post-election VOW wants the new government to initiate public consultations and a new green paper on defense and security. National Coordinator Sandra Ruch explains that the Canadian government has an obligation under the United Nations' Security Council resolution 1325 to advance its women, peace and security agenda. "This month marks the 15th anniversary of resolution 1325 and the UN has reminded member states that women must be at the table on decisions that relate defense and security." VOW's open letter to "Make Space for Peace" is also launched this week in recognition of International Keep Space for Peace Week. International Keep Space for Peace Week runs from October 3-10 and is led by VOWs partner organization, the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space. BACKGROUND: Established in 1960, Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) is a non-partisan Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) comprised of a network of diverse women with consultative status at the United Nations ECOSOC.
